  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1.5 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 16 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and prepare two 9-inch cake pans.
  2. Whisk together dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  3. Mix wet ingredients separately, then combine with dry ingredients.
  4. Divide batter between pans and bake for 28 to 32 minutes.
  5. Cool cakes completely before frosting.
  6. Beat frosting ingredients until fluffy and frost the cake.

Notes

For the deepest flavor, refrigerate the frosted cake for 30 minutes before slicing.
