Ingredients

Main Component
  • 1 lb flank steak thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil plus more for frying
Sauce
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp ginger grated
  • 1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3 green onions cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce optional

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Spatula
  • Knife

Method

  1. Toss sliced flank steak with cornstarch until evenly coated.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet and cook beef in batches until browned and crispy, then set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, sauté garlic and ginger, then add soy sauce, water, and brown sugar and simmer until slightly thickened.
  4. Return beef to skillet, add green onions and sesame oil, and toss until sauce thickens and coats the beef.
  5. Serve hot over rice or noodles and garnish with sesame seeds if desired.

Notes

Slice beef against the grain for tenderness and avoid overcrowding the pan when searing.
