French Dip Sandwich

Ingredients
  

Sandwich
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 500 g thinly sliced roast beef
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter softened
Au Jus
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce optional
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 onion thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 1 tbsp butter

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Tongs
  • Baking sheet
  • Oven broiler

Method
 

  1. Melt butter in saucepan and sauté onions until soft.
  2. Add garlic and cook briefly until fragrant.
  3. Pour in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and thyme and simmer 10–15 minutes.
  4. Add roast beef to the au jus and warm gently.
  5. Toast buttered hoagie rolls under broiler until lightly crisp.
  6. Fill rolls with warm roast beef and top with cheese.
  7. Broil until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Serve with small bowls of au jus for dipping.

Notes

Use quality roast beef and sturdy bread for best results.
