  • 1 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1.75 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 0.75 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 3.5 cups powdered sugar
  • 0.75 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons whole milk as needed
  • 1 pinch salt

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line a muffin pan with cupcake liners.
  2. Mix melted butter and sugar, then add eggs and vanilla.
  3. Fold in dry ingredients and chocolate chips.
  4. Fill liners three-quarters full and bake 18-22 minutes.
  5. Cool completely before frosting.
  6. Beat frosting ingredients until smooth and fluffy.
  7. Pipe frosting onto cupcakes and decorate as desired.

Notes

For the fudgiest texture, avoid overbaking and use high-quality cocoa powder.
